 The much awaited & required workshop on

"New GIA & AGS Grading System"

was held on 29th Nov, 2005

• The workshop was organized by Lexus and Indian Diamond Institute.

• Mr. S.P. Shah of Venus Jewel was the chief guest and he inaugurated the workshop.

• Mr. C.R. Sanghavi, Chairman of IDI welcomed the participants.

• As per Indian traditions, a lamp was lighted to declare the workshop open

• The guests, including Mr. Kishor Maldar of Karp Impex, provided the much needed light to the subject of the workshop.

• Mr. S.P. Shah shook the audience with his enriching inaugural speech. He shared his experience about shift in cut grading system from early 90s, and showed his concern about the fact that Cut grade “C” is missing from the price list. Further he showed his concern for the consistency in grading.

• Mr. Janak Mistry, shared the understanding about the new Cut grading system, being introduced by GIA and AGS. He also shared his concern over manufacturer’s dilemma in the event of limited information from laboratories. The challenges and opportunities were discussed and debated.

• The workshop was highly interactive, participants and audience actively participating in every debate. The Cut grading system understanding and debate lasted for more than 120 minutes. Here Mr. Kishor Virani of Karp Impex is seen discussing & debating the issue with Mr. Chandrakant Sanghavi of Sanghavi Exports.

• The workshop was attended by the top brass of almost all the diamond manufacturing firms from Surat. A few from Mumbai joined as well. The workshop was limited to the top decision takers. The subsequent management level to be introduced to the subject at later date, after top management’s decision.

• The top leaders from Surat and Mumbai diamond manufacturing opened up an open table discussion. The discussion covered varied issues including talking to BIS (Bureau of Indian standards) to take up standardization of Diamond grading system. They shared their concern towards uncertainty.
